Presenting Proofs with Adapted Granularity
نویسندگان
چکیده
When mathematicians present proofs they usually adapt their explanations to their didactic goals and to the (assumed) knowledge of their addressees. Modern automated theorem provers, in contrast, present proofs usually at a fixed level of detail (also called granularity). Often these presentations are neither intended nor suitable for human use. A challenge therefore is to develop userand goal-adaptive proof presentation techniques that obey common mathematical practice. We present a flexible and adaptive approach to proof presentation based on classification. Expert knowledge for the classification task can be handauthored or extracted from annotated proof examples via machine learning techniques. The obtained models are employed for the automated generation of further proofs at an adapted level of granularity.

Quranic way of presenting proofs for God`s existence
Regardless of the view of those philosophers like Plantinga who see no need in any proof for the existence of God, scholars have presented four views on Quranic way of proving the existence of God including demonstration, awakening, implication and clear demonstration. Describing and criticizing the views in detail, the author has viewed differently. God has regarded the level of the addressee`...
متن کاملAdaptive Assertion - Level Proofs ( Extended Abstract ) ∗
For nearly two decades human-oriented theorem proving techniques have been in the focus of interest of the ΩMEGA project [1] at Saarland University. And since one decade their application to tutorial natural language dialog on mathematical proofs has been studied in the interdisciplinary project DIALOG [3]. The focus on user-orientedness and mathematical practice in these projects resulted in d...
متن کاملMathematical Domain Reasoning Tasks in Natural Language Tutorial Dialog on Proofs
We study challenges that are imposed to mathematical domain reasoning in the context of natural language tutorial dialog on mathematical proofs. The focus is on proof step evaluation: (i) How can mathematical domain reasoning support the resolution of ambiguities and underspecified parts in proof steps uttered by a student? (ii) How can mathematical domain reasoning support the evaluation of a ...
متن کاملGranularity-Adaptive Proof Presentation
Granularity matters in mathematics. For example, in introductory textbooks intermediate proof steps are often skipped, when this seems appropriate. Such a situation is given in the elementary proof in basic set theory reproduced in Figure 1. Whereas most of the proof steps consist of the application of exactly one mathematical fact (a definition or a lemma), the step from assertion 9 to asserti...
متن کاملGranularity in Relational Formalisms - With Application to Time and Space Representation
Temporal and spatial phenomena can be seen at a more or less precise granularity, depending on the kind of perceivable details. As a consequence, the relationship between two objects may differ depending on the granularity considered. When merging representations of different granularity, this may raise problems. This paper presents general rules of granularity conversion in relation algebras. ...
